Hedegaard 1: Where are the feminists?

Another bad blow against freedom in the west. Lars Hedegaard, President of the Danish Free Press Society and The International Free Press Society, was yesterday found guilty of hate speech under the Danish penal code. His crime – as I wrote previously here, here and here – was to draw attention to child abuse and violence against women in Muslim culture. The day after the interview, he stressed that his opinions were about Islam and not intended to refer to all Muslims.
The trial was a show trial in which Hedegaard was unable to mount a defence, because under the Orwellian rules of the Danish legal system he was in effect convicted before his trial even took place. In the lower court, however, he was aquitted – but only on the technicality that he had not known that these remarks, made in an interview, would be made public. A higher court, however, has now decided that Hedegaard did know that his remarks would be made public. And so he has now been convicted of racism.
This technicality should not obscure the real issue. The Danish court has convicted Hedegaard of racism for drawing attention to violence in Muslim families. The message Denmark has thus sent out is that it is racist and a crime to seek to defend Muslim women and children from the phenomenon of ‘honour violence’. Hedegaard 2: »Getting to Denmark«
I 1975 ville Fukuyama og Harvard have kaldt det “Getting to Sweden”, i 1985, “Getting to Denmark”, i 1995 “Getting to Norway” og i dag måske “Getting to Switzerland”, med tanke på deres direkte demokrati, EU-frihed, nationale selvforsvar og velstand.

It took the best part of a decade for Francis Fukuyama’s “End of History” to be chewed up and spit out by a resurgent Islam. His latest tome may get upended somewhat quicker. The new thesis attempts to explain why the old thesis didn’t quite turn out as planned:

At the heart of this remarkable book is the idea of “getting to Denmark.” By this, Fukuyama means creating stable, peaceful, prosperous, inclusive, and honest societies (like Denmark). As in his “End of History” essay, Fukuyama treats this as the logical endpoint of social development, and suggests that Denmarkness requires three things: functioning states, rule of law, and accountable government.

Fascinating. Speaking of that second category (“rule of law”), has he been to Denmark lately? I was there a couple of months back as the guest of the Danish Free Press Society. Its president, Lars Hedegaard, has just been fined 5,000 kroner under the Danish penal code for “[issuing] a pronouncement or other communication by which a group of persons are threatened, insulted or denigrated due to their race, skin colour, national or ethnic origin, religion or sexual orientation.” This was over some remarks he made about Islam’s treatment of women in a private conversation that was, unbeknown to him, recorded and then uploaded to the Internet.

The Muslim world is certainly “getting to Denmark.” It’s also getting to the Netherlands, to Austria, to France, and beyond. In Scandinavia and in other advanced Western societies, the state grows ever bolder in constraining freedom of expression and other core Western liberties. In the interests of enforcing the state religion of a hollow and delusional “multiculturalism,” basic tenets of Fukuyama’s “rule of law” — including due process, the truth as defense, and equality before the law — are tossed aside in the multiculti version of heresy trials. As recent decisions in Michigan suggest, America is not immune to this trend. Mark Steyn

Hedegaard 3: Støt Lars Hedegaards kamp for ytringsfriheden

[…] Photographs acquired by Reuters and taken about an hour after the U.S. assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad in Pakistan show three dead men lying in pools of blood, but no weapons.

The photos, taken by a Pakistani security official who entered the compound after the early morning raid on Monday, show two men dressed in traditional Pakistani garb and one in a t-shirt, with blood streaming from their ears, noses and mouths.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, sold the pictures to Reuters. […] Pakistani official sells Osama death scene photos to Reuters ; Osama bin Laden compound in Abbottabad – in pictures

Europeans have been labelled ‘cheese-eating surrender-monkeys’ by bloggers in the United States angry at being chastised for celebrating the death of Osama Bin Laden.

While thousands of Americans took to the streets to celebrate the killing, the reaction in Europe was much more muted.

Many have questioned not only the manner of the killing of an unarmed man, but also the taste and dignity of the American public who chanted ‘USA’ in the streets. […]

A glance at Metro’s online comment thread shows near unanimity among the paper’s American readers on the European criticism: ‘Arrogant, smug, thoughtless and thankless people,’ wrote LisaC – in one of the less vitriolic posts.
